(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Dead Sea, Oct.23 (Petra) -- The Royal Society for The Conservation of Nature (RSCN) and in cooperation with the Wings of Hope Society(WOHS ), on Saturday opened a new "Solar Energy Project" in Mujib Biosphere Reserve Chalets.
RSCN Director-General, Yahya Khalid, said that the society is always keen to find opportunities that provide alternative sources of energy to its facilities and reserves. He urged at the same time all institutions to exploit clean renewable energy as a solution to the growing needs of new energy resources.
The new eco-friendly project provides (0.8) KW of electrical energy for the Mujib Reserve Chalets located at the Dead Sea, he added.
The new solar system, also reduces carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere, the director explained.
WOHS Chairman, Nadim Muasher, highlighted the importance of this new system, saying that the society will continue supporting such creative projects that provide eco-friendly and clean energy.
RSCN and Wings of Hope Society, he said, launched in cooperation with Marriott Hotels in Jordan, the global eco-friendly "Clean Up the World 2016" campaign under the theme "Our place, Our planet, Our responsibility".
General Manager of the Jordan Valley Marriott Dead Sea Resort & Spa, Philip Papadopoulos, commended the project, stressing that "its our shared responsibility to protect nature and make it free of pollution not only for us, but also for our children and generations to come." The clean up campaign, he explained, kicked off in Zara Dead Sea Hot Springs area in the Jordan Valley with the participation of volunteers representing various sectors in the Kingdom.
"Clean Up the World" is a community based environmental campaign that inspires and empowers communities from every corner of the globe to clean up, fix up and conserve their environment.
Around 35 million volunteers are taking part in the campaign, that takes responsibility for the environment with the effects felt not only in the community in which they live, but also across the whole planet, Papadopoulos explained.
Now in its 22nd year, Clean Up the World campaign , is held in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It mobilizes millions of volunteers from 130 countries annually, making it one of the largest community-based environmental campaigns in the world.
The campaign brings together businesses, community groups, schools, governments and individuals in a range of activities and programs that positively improve local environments.
RSCN is an independent national organization devoted to the conservation of Jordan's natural resources. It was established in 1966, under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Noor and with His Majesty the late King Hussein as Honorary President.
RSCN is one of the few national organizations in the Middle East that aims at protecting and managing the natural resources and wild lives .
RSCN has dedicated itself to setting up and managing of nine protected areas the Kingdom including, Dana, Wadi Mujib, Azraq, Shaumari, Dibeen, Ajloun, Fifa, Yarmouk and Wadi Rum. These areas cover over 1200 square kilometers in some of the finest natural landscapes in the country to safeguard Jordan's natural environment and biodiversity. Currently, a reserve is being set up in Burqu, while eight additional sites are proposed locations for the establishment of new reserves in the upcoming years.
Wings of Hope Society (WOHS) is a non-profit organization that works to improve and elevate the standard of living in Jordan's communities. It also aims at giving hope of a brighter future to young people and equipping them to realize their full potential.
WOHS provides young people opportunities to develop their skills, characters, habits and encourages to build their communities through launching different initiatives, covering many fields including, education, music and arts, health, awareness, road safety and many others.
