Seminar on combating extremist idealogies kicks off in Iraq

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) A seminar on combating extremist idealogies errantly exercised by the likes of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) was co-organized Tuesday by Jordan's Imam al-Shafi'i Scientific Center and Islamic scholars Union in Kurdistan.
The seminar is part of the continuation of efforts aiming to combat terrorism and extremism by endeavors of Islamic scholars and preachers to correct distorted modes of religious thinking adopted by terrorists, said head of Islamic scholars Union in Kurdistan Abdullah al-Mullah Saeed.
Islamic institutions, especially the Cairo-based Al-Azhar, have been playing a prominent role in correcting such nefariously-propagated, and ostensibly, religious-based modes of thinking, he added.
On his part, Samir Murad, head of Imam al-Shafi'i Scientific Center, said that the aim of the seminar is to unify efforts in the region so as to face extremist idealogies in the defense of well-sanctioned Islamic dogma and Muslim code of conduct.
A number of researchers took part in the event; Rashad al-Killani, from Jordan, showed in his paper the causes of religious extremism and how to address them.
Mohammad Abdullah Ahmad, from Kurdistan, showed differences between ignorance and takfirism, an Arabic word that indicates rejection of religious beliefs of the same sect or another.
Jamal Al-Safarti, a Jordanian researcher, said that jihad in Islam is considered a means to an end.
The participants urged Islamic scholars and thinkers to unite and intensify efforts to combat and correct the extremist thoughts distorted by terrorists.
