EP delegation calls for Yemen crisis to be solved by political means

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Michele Alliot-Marie, chair of Delegation for relations with the Arab Peninsula in the European Parliament, Thursday described the situation in Yemen as "very serious and very unstable" and called for another humanitarian truce.

Speaking at a meeting of the Delegation she said that "obviously the conflict in Yemen has to be solved through political means. Of course this is true for all conflicts. There is never purely a military solution. Clearly a military solution has to also envisage a political solution. That is what we have to keep in our mind," said Alliot-Marie, a former French defence minister.

She noted that today in Geneva there was supposed to be a conference for peace in Yemen under the aegis of the UN" but unfortunately it has been postponed without setting another date which is bad news." "I believe there should be another humanitarian truce which will allow the agencies to step up their help and deliver aid to all areas affected on the conflict," she said.

On her part, Rosmaria Gili, deputy head of division for Arab Peninsula at the EU foreign service, known as the European External Action Service, informed the meeting about the outcome of that 24th EU-Gulf Cooperation Council ministerial meeting held on 24 May in Doha, Qatar.

She noted that the focus of the Doha meeting was political developments in the region as well as counter terrorism cooperation between the two regional groups.

"The main outcome of the meeting is to be able to have a forum for discussion in the regional situation. There is clearly a common will to see more cooperation," said Gili.

"The growing instability is a common concern in the region that we consider a common neighborhood," she added.
