Ban Ki-Moon: Syrian People Losing Hope

(MENAFN- QNA) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that Syrian people were losing hope after being targeted by "indiscriminate" shelling and aerial strikes, including the use of barrel bombs by government forces.

"The level of carnage and devastation throughout the Syrian Arab Republic should shock the collective conscience of the world," Ban said in his latest monthly report to the Security Council published Wednesday.

"The Syrian people are losing hope. They cannot afford to wait," the UN chief said, urging that a political solution must be found for Syria, where the war has left more than 220,000 people dead since spring 2011.

"The international community, and particularly the Security Council, must take action without delay to end the daily violations of international law and the killing of civilians." More than 12 million, or more than half of Syria's 23 million population - including 5 million children - were in need of humanitarian aid, he said.
