China offers signing FTA with Bangladesh to narrow trade gap

(MENAFN) According to Bangladesh's foreign minister, China has offered to sign a free trade agreement with Bangladesh in a bid to narrow a growing trade gap, Arab News reported.

Chinese Foreign Minister made the proposal during talks with his counterpart, a move that local exporters called a "huge development". Bangladeshi did not say whether it would sign up to any such agreement.

Two-way trade between Bangladesh and China soared to USD8.3 billion in the financial year ending in June, but exports from Bangladesh accounted for less than a tenth of the total.

"The Chinese minister has offered to sign a free trade agreement. The Chinese government is well aware of the existing trade gap and they assured us they want to minimize it," the minister said.
