UAE- Man cons people offering to halve traffic fines held

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The suspect used to forge credit cards or steal the details and use them to pay off the fines though the transaction would not be completed in the system.

Sharjah: The Sharjah Police on Thursday arrested an Arab man for his alleged involvement in several electronic fraud cases. A top Criminal Investigation Department officer said that they received a number of complaints about the suspect identified as M.A.R. who was allegedly involved in many electronic fraud attempts.

He said the suspect communicated with his victims through websites and convinced them that he could get their traffic fines halved. “For example if someone had to pay Dh6000 in fines for traffic law violations he would offer the person help saying all the latter had to pay was Dh3000 but he cheated them” the officer explained.

Following the complaints police formed a team. During intensified investigation the team managed to arrest M.A.R. red-handed. He confessed to the charge and informed the police about the methods he used for his fraudulent activities. He used to forge credit cards or steal the details and use them to pay off the fines though the transaction would not be completed in the system. He would then ask the victims to check immediately and when they did that it would seem that the fines had been cleared. He would then ask them to transfer half the amounts to his account immediately.

The victim would find out that he/she had been taken for a ride only when the system rejected the payments and the fines reappeared on the records.

The officer said that he had been committing this crime with the help of someone living outside the country. He told the police that he got only 7 per cent of the amount paid by the targeted victims and the rest went to his accomplice abroad. Based on his confession M.A.R. has been referred to the Public Prosecution.

Police have warned people against dealing with criminals out there to snare them with online offers. He urged the public to reconfirm any such offers with the authorities concerned before making payments.
