Obama urges "restraint, caution" in Ukraine

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) In a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko Monday, US President Barack Obama called for "restraint and caution in (Ukrainian) military operations in order to avoid civilian casualties," the White House said in a statement.

Obama "expressed his strong support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity," and "noted the urgency" of the aid efforts following months of clashes with Russian-backed separatists.

For his part, Poroshenko "updated the President on his engagement with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on the effort to deliver multilateral humanitarian aid to the distressed populations in eastern Ukraine." The statement said both leaders "agreed that any Russian intervention in Ukraine without the formal, express consent and authorization of the Ukraine government would be unacceptable and a violation of international law," and insisted that "all parties should prioritize diplomatic efforts toward finding a political resolution to the crisis." Obama made the call while away on vacation at Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts.
