The recently introduced right to education (rte) act stipulates a pupil-teacher ratio of 30 or less for schools with less than 200 enrolled students. schools with greater enrolment should have a (pupilteacher ratio) ptr of 40. a head count carried out by the kerala education department at the beginning of the academic year showed that the total number of enrolment in 3557 government and government-aided schools across the state was little above 100000 students.The number of teachers found in these schools in an online survey carried out along with the head count was 46240.This works out to nearly one teacher for every two students. the head count showed that 190 schools had less than 10 students in each school. every seven students in these schools get the service of three teachers each.The head count revealed that as many as 593 schools have students between 10 and 20. on an average there are 11 teachers to teach 16 students in these schools. the number of schools with students between 21 and 30 are 717 and 31 and 40 is 756. there are average 15 teachers to teach 25 students in the former and 17 teachers for every 35 students in the latter.The sharp drop in student enrolment is considered mainly the result of continuous fall in the growth rate of population. the demographic transition has led to a steady fall in the school-going population.According to kerala development report the number of children in 10 people dropped from four in 1961 to 2 in 2001.The school age population is expected to shrink considerably in the coming decades. the kdr estimates that children in the lower primary school ages will decline from 2847000 in 1991 to 1638000 in 2051. this will render more and more schools in the state ‘uneconomic’.As per the kerala education rules a lower or upper primary or high school in which the student strength per standard or batch is below 25 is called an uneconomic school.Though economic experts have been suggesting closure of uneconomic schools and retrenchment of surplus teachers the successive government have been sustaining them and paying the teachers without doing any work.News?khaleejtimes.com for more news from khaleej times follow us on facebook at facebook.com/khaleejtimes and on twitter at ?khaleejtime
