(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Algiers Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a message of hope and revival, faithfulness to the movement's Afro-Asian and third-world principles, said Algerian Foreign Affairs Minister Ramtane Lamamra.
"It is also meant to give a fresh impetus to the movement's action in major international issues, especially those relating to peace and security, development, human rights, protection of environment and governance," Lamamra said at the opening session.
In his statement, carried by the Algeria Press Service (APS), the Foreign Minister went on to say that "In the current global context, the movement should be more vigilant to be involved in the changes that must be carried out and the new balances that must be established." He noted that the international relations are changing rapidly and the NAM should be ready to play a more active role on the international arena.
The international scene "requires now more than ever further efforts and perseverance to convince all the players that the future of humanity requires the respect of the principles enshrined by the United Nations Charter and the movement's objectives." A large number of ministers and senior officials of the NAM member states are partaking in the conference. Kuwait is represented in the event by a delegation headed by Director of the International Organizations Department at the Foreign Ministry.
The conferees will discuss several key issues including terrorism, transnational crime and preparation for the NAM Summit to be held in 2015 in Caracas (Venezuela).
