Türkiye's Inflation Sees Sharp Uptick in April

(MENAFN) Türkiye's annual consumer inflation accelerated sharply in April, climbing to 32.37% from 30.87% the prior month — surpassing analyst expectations and underscoring persistent price pressures across the economy, official data showed Monday.

The Turkish Statistical Institute reported that the consumer price index (CPI) surged 4.18% on a monthly basis in April, pushing cumulative price growth to 14.64% since December 2025. The figures arrived well above projections from a survey conducted last week, which had penciled in annual inflation of 31.11% and a monthly rise of just 3.19%.

Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels delivered the sharpest blow among the three major categories tracked, soaring 46.60% year-on-year and adding 6.30 percentage points to the headline annual rate — the steepest climb of any major group. On a monthly basis, the same category rose 7.99%, contributing 0.90 percentage points to the overall CPI increase.

Transport costs were not far behind, advancing 35.06% annually with a 5.66 percentage-point contribution to the headline figure, while recording a 4.29% month-on-month gain that added 0.73 percentage points to the monthly reading.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages — one of the most heavily weighted components in the index — climbed 34.55% year-on-year in April, accounting for 8.72 percentage points of the annual rate. Monthly, the category rose 3.70%, contributing 0.95 percentage points to the monthly CPI uptick.

The April 2025 data marks a notable shift from the same period a year earlier, when annual inflation stood at a staggering 69.80% and monthly prices rose 3.18% — a sign of the broader disinflationary trajectory Ankara has been navigating, even as the latest figures signal that progress remains uneven. A year ago in April 2025, monthly inflation had come in at 3% against an annual rate of 37.86%.
