Guterres hails release of Israeli captives detained in Gaza
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday welcomed the return of Israeli hostages held in Gaza and called on all parties to respect the terms of the ongoing ceasefire.
“I very much welcome the release of the Israeli hostages held in Gaza,” Guterres said in a statement issued from Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. He expressed relief that the freed captives “have regained their freedom and will be soon reunited with their loved ones after the immense suffering they have endured.”
The UN chief reiterated his previous appeal for the return of the remains of those who died in captivity and urged all sides to “build on this momentum and to honor their commitments under the ceasefire to end the nightmare in Gaza.”
Guterres emphasized that the United Nations “is working to support all efforts to end the conflict in Gaza and alleviate the suffering of civilians.”
His comments coincide with the implementation of a ceasefire agreement, brokered by the parties involved, which allows for both humanitarian assistance and the exchange of hostages in the Gaza Strip. The first stage of the agreement went into effect on Friday under US President Donald Trump’s plan to conclude the two-year Israeli military campaign in the enclave.
Since October 2023, Israeli operations have reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 67,800 Palestinians in Gaza — the majority of whom were women and children — leaving the territory largely uninhabitable.
