(MENAFN) The Gymnastics Federation of Russia has conveyed heartfelt sympathies to both the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation and the bereaved family of Naufal Takdir Al Bari.

The young gymnast tragically succumbed to a grave neck injury sustained during a training camp in Russia, passing away on Wednesday.

The heartbreaking accident took place on September 13 in the city of Penza while the 19-year-old was practicing on the horizontal bar.

On Thursday, a news outlet reported a statement from the director of the training facility, revealing that Al Bari “had a bad fall into the foam-rubber-lined pit.”

In an official statement released on Saturday, the Federation emphasized that “no one is calling into question the professionalism of the [late] athlete or his team.”

It highlighted that “artistic gymnastics is a discipline fraught with its own inherent risks,” acknowledging the dangerous nature of the sport.

According to the statement, Russian staff acted promptly in attempting to preserve Al Bari’s life, quickly transporting him to a medical facility where leading neurosurgeons provided immediate care for his injuries.

At the same time, the regional office of the Investigative Committee informed the news outlet that, despite the high level of medical attention Al Bari received, a formal investigation has been initiated.

Authorities are now examining whether all essential safety standards were properly followed at the venue where the incident occurred.
