Polish MEP gets booted due to ‘Jewish genocide’ remark

(MENAFN) Polish MEP Grzegorz Braun was removed from the European Parliament on Wednesday after he referred to the "Jewish genocide in Gaza" during a moment of silence for Holocaust victims. His comment was made during the Parliament's commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, prompting European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to ask him to leave.

Braun, a member of Poland's right-wing Confederation alliance, later posted on X, clarifying that he did not intend to disrupt the event but rather to "supplement" it. His statement has drawn criticism from lawmakers, including those in Poland. The European Jewish Congress condemned his remark as "antisemitism in the heart of European democracy."

Braun previously made headlines in December 2023 for disrupting a Hanukkah ceremony in Poland’s parliament, using a fire extinguisher to put out candles and calling the event a symbol of a "racist, tribal, wild Talmudic cult."

The incident follows broader European tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with some EU politicians, including Irish MEP Clare Daly, criticizing the EU's stance on Israel's actions in Gaza.
