DOHA: The Ministry of Municipality, represented by the Agricultural Affairs Department, is providing various types of support to local bee Farm owners, encouraging them to enhance honey production.

“The support includes beehives, the installation of cooling systems for summer, marketing platforms for selling their products,” said Ahmed Al Yafei, Head of the Agricultural Guidance and Services Section at the Agricultural Affairs Department of the Ministry of Municipality.

Speaking to Qatar TV yesterday, Al Yafei said that the summer is very challenging for beekeeping and providing cool places and food.“We placed shads on beehives and connected them with water pipes. We also installed desert coolers to make beehives cool during summer,” said Al Yafei.

“This is one of the alternative ways which we are trying to implement in beekeeping farms and apiaries. We are benefiting from the experiences of those countries with similar climates to provide the best solutions for beekeeping farms to make the beehive cool during summer,” he added.

He said that the Agricultural Affairs Department provided beehives and beekeeping equipment to local farms free of cost.“We also provide training for the workers of beekeeping farms about the process of honey-producing and harvesting,” said Al Yafei.

He said that the Ministry of Municipality in coordination with the authorities concerned and partners provided marketing platforms to local beekeeping farm owners to sell their produce directly to the customers.

“The initiative aims to provide good yield to the farmers for their hard work and investments in a bid to encourage them to increase production to meet the local demand,” said Al Yafei. There are basically three types of honey in Qatar – Sidr, Samur and Al Rabi, according to the seasonal flowers. The Sidr honey is being produced in large quantity in Qatar and has the highest demand.

There are two honey harvesting seasons in Qatar. Sidr honey is harvested in November and Al Rabi and Al Samur honey are harvested in May.

The production of local honey is growing year by year due to the constant support of the Ministry of Municipality for local bee farms. The strong participation of local farms in the 6th Souq Waqif International Honey Exhibition reflects the growth of local honey sector.

As many as 54 local companies including nine local farms are participating in the exhibition. The exhibition will run until February 8 at Eastern Square - Souq Waqif with 107 exhibitors from 27 countries.
