Israel bombs Jenin refugee camp
(MENAFN) A Palestinian official reported on Sunday that the Israeli army is targeting residential blocks in the Jenin refugee camp, similar to the tactics used in the Gaza Strip. Kamal Abu al-Rub, the governor of Jenin in the northern West Bank, stated that Israeli forces are systematically demolishing homes and infrastructure with the intention of making the camp uninhabitable. He characterized the ongoing attacks as part of Israel's broader strategy of transferring its war from Gaza to the West Bank, drawing parallels to what he described as a genocide in Gaza.
Abu al-Rub highlighted that the scale of the bombings in Jenin is unprecedented since 2002, when the camp suffered significant destruction during the Second Intifada. He noted that the current situation is even worse than the tragedy of 2002, with Palestinians in the area facing a greater catastrophe. The governor warned that Israeli forces plan to continue their assault, potentially demolishing more residential blocks in the camp.
The conflict has resulted in widespread displacement, with Abu al-Rub reporting that nearly all of the camp’s 3,420 Palestinian families have been forced to flee due to the ongoing military assault. According to the official, only 70 families remain in the camp, with the majority displaced by the violence.
On the same day, Bashir Matahen, the director of public relations for Jenin municipality, confirmed that the Israeli army had destroyed 21 homes across three neighborhoods within the camp. The continued bombardment and destruction have left residents in a dire situation, as they struggle to cope with the escalating violence.
