Ghoul sniper rifle makes notable appearance
(MENAFN) During the handover of Israeli prisoners as part of the fourth batch of the exchange deal under the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, the Ghoul sniper rifle, developed by Hamas’ military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, made a notable appearance. The rifle was carried by Qassam fighters during the exchange ceremony in Gaza City’s port. The Ghoul rifle, first used by Hamas during Israel’s 51-day war on Gaza in 2014, is a highly advanced sniper rifle named after the late Qassam commander, Adnan al-Ghoul, who was killed in 2004. It has a 14.5 mm caliber and can reach lethal ranges of up to 2 kilometers.
This appearance comes over a year after Israel claimed to have dismantled the Qassam Brigades, including their manufacturing capabilities. Despite Israel's claims, al-Qassam’s military strength has remained a key feature in their resistance efforts. The sniper rifle has been used in numerous operations against Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers during the ongoing conflict.
On Saturday, the Qassam Brigades handed over two Israeli prisoners to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Khan Younis, as part of the broader prisoner exchange process. This marks the fourth batch of exchanges, which also includes the release of 183 Palestinian detainees by Israel. The prisoner exchange process follows a series of agreements under the ceasefire that started on January 19, 2025, and will continue with further exchanges, including the release of prisoners with American citizenship.
