Iran reports 27 percent increase in road transit over 10 months

(MENAFN) Iran’s Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization (RMTO) has reported a 27 percent rise in road transit during the first ten months of the current Iranian calendar year, spanning from March 20, 2024, to January 19, 2025. This increase marks a significant improvement compared to the same period in the previous year, highlighting growth in the country’s transportation sector.

Mehdi Khezri, the deputy for transportation at RMTO, stated that the highest transit record was set in the previous year (March 2023–March 2024), with 14.75 million tons of goods transported by 636,000 trucks and trailers. He noted that more than 9.39 million tons of this total consisted of non-oil products. Khezri emphasized that the same record has been matched within the first ten months of the current year, demonstrating a continued upward trend in road transport.

According to Khezri, Iran’s road transit sector has shown steady recovery following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The country currently has 1,875 international transport companies in operation, supported by a fleet of 50,000 vehicles and 40,000 drivers. This extensive network plays a vital role in maintaining and expanding Iran’s trade and transit capacity.

Khezri also addressed challenges faced by Iranian transit drivers, particularly at the Bazargan border. He attributed these difficulties to long-standing policies enacted decades ago but stated that recent diplomatic efforts, including a visit by Iran’s Minister of Transport and Urban Development to Turkey, have helped ease some of these issues.
