Iran's Road Transit Expected to Reach 17.5 Million Tons by Year-End

(MENAFN) Iran is projected to see the transit of 17.5 million tons of commodities through its roads by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2025), according to a statement from an official at the Iran Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization (RMTO). Javad Hedayati, the director-general of the organization’s Transit Office, revealed that 15 million tons of goods had already been transited in the first ten months of the current calendar year, marking a 27 percent increase compared to the same period the previous year.

Hedayati further explained that the country aims to reach 40 million tons of annual transit by the end of the Seventh National Development Plan. This ambitious goal highlights Iran’s strategic focus on expanding its role in regional trade and improving the efficiency of its road transit network.

Mehdi Khezri, the deputy for transportation at RMTO, noted that the previous year (March 2023-March 2024) saw the highest record for transit transport, with 14.75 million tons of goods moved by 636,000 trucks and trailers. Of the total, more than 9.39 million tons consisted of non-oil products, underscoring the diversification of Iran’s export base beyond its oil industry.

This growth in road transit reflects Iran’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its transportation infrastructure and improve trade connections with neighboring countries. The figures indicate a positive trend for the country’s logistics sector, which plays a crucial role in its economic development.
