183 Palestinian prisoners get freed

(MENAFN) In the context of a U.S. plan to rebuild Gaza in exchange for the displacement of its residents and the waiver of the right of return, 183 Palestinian prisoners were freed yesterday as part of the fourth batch of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement. In return, 3 Zionist prisoners were released. At the same time, the Israeli army launched a raid on Beitunia, near Ramallah, to suppress celebrations welcoming the return of the freed prisoners. The army fired sound bombs at Palestinian gatherings in an effort to disperse the crowds.

According to the Palestinian Prisoners' Club, 18 of the released prisoners were serving life sentences, 54 had long sentences, and 111 were arrested after October 7, 2023. The Qassam Brigades, the military arm of Hamas, handed over three Zionist prisoners: Yarden Bibas, Keith Segal (a dual U.S.-Zionist citizen), and Ofer Calderon. During the exchange, two of the prisoners were transferred to the International Red Cross in Khan Yunis, while the third was handed over at Gaza’s port. The Qassam Brigades also used a confiscated Zionist vehicle during the operation, and the weapon "Al-Tafur," seized from the occupation, was seen in the hands of Hamas fighters.

As the fourth batch of the exchange deal was implemented, 82 prisoners remain in the hands of Palestinian resistance groups in Gaza, 35 of whom are declared dead. Hamas emphasized that this achievement solidified their commitment to the ceasefire agreement and urged continued pressure on Israel to adhere to the humanitarian terms of the deal. They also highlighted the dedication of the Qassam Brigades, who ensured that the released Zionist prisoner, who suffers from multiple health issues, received necessary medical care during the exchange.
