Russian delegation arrives in Syria

(MENAFN) Moscow and Damascus have reaffirmed their longstanding, mutually beneficial relationship, as highlighted by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov during a recent visit to Syria. This marks the first Russian diplomatic trip to Syria since the change in leadership.

Bogdanov led the Russian delegation in talks with Syria’s de facto leader, Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa, following his group's recent takeover of Damascus. The meeting, which also included Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Health Minister Maher al-Sharaa, discussed various aspects of cooperation between the two nations.

Despite recent political changes in Syria, with al-Sharaa's group forcing former President Bashar Assad to flee, Bogdanov emphasized that the core nature of the Russian-Syrian relationship remains unchanged. He confirmed that both nations’ strategic partnership is centered on preserving Syria's unity and independence.

Discussions included Russia's ongoing military presence in Syria, with a focus on maintaining its facilities in Tartus and Khmeimim. No new agreements were made, but the two countries agreed to continue in-depth dialogues regarding their bilateral cooperation.

Bogdanov also highlighted Russia’s commitment to assisting Syria in addressing its economic and social challenges. He noted that the new Syrian administration had shown understanding and consideration of Russia’s role. The talks also covered trade relations and continued Russian involvement in rebuilding key infrastructure projects in Syria, such as power plants and dams.

Al-Sharaa emphasized the importance of maintaining Russia’s presence in Syria, stating that Moscow’s relationship with Syria remains vital, and there is no desire for Russia to withdraw in a way that would harm this bond.
