(MENAFN) At least six construction workers, including two non-natives, and a doctor were killed over the weekend in a suspected militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, according to officials. The incident occurred at a construction site in the Gagangir area of central Ganderbal district, where the workers were engaged in the construction of the strategic Z-Morh tunnel and the widening of the Jammu-Leh highway, close to the popular tourist destination of Sonamarg. In addition to the fatalities, at least five others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The attack followed the discovery of a bullet-riddled body of a non-Kashmiri individual in the southern Kashmir's Shopian district, intensifying concerns about security in the region. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah condemned the incident, describing it as a "dastardly terror attack on civilians." He vowed that those responsible for this "heinous act" would not escape justice and would face severe consequences from Indian security forces.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also condemned the attack, expressing sadness over the loss of life among laborers who were contributing to a vital infrastructure project in the area. This incident marks the deadliest attack since Abdullah took office last week, making him the region's first elected chief minister since 2019. In response to the violence, a team from the National Investigation Agency has been dispatched to the area to conduct an investigation into the attack.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a leader of the Hurriyat Conference, expressed his deep sorrow regarding the incident, emphasizing that Islam, like all religions, condemns such acts of violence. He noted that every life lost in this manner is a painful reminder of the ongoing cycle of violence and uncertainty that the region has faced for decades. The tragic event has reignited discussions about security and the safety of civilians in conflict-affected areas of Kashmir.
