BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 17. The European
Union is actively engaging with Iran, the U.S., and other
participants in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to
keep diplomatic channels open and explore opportunities for
resuming meaningful nuclear talks, said Peter Stano, European
Commission Spokesperson, in an interview with Trend .
Stano emphasized the EU's role as the JCPOA coordinator under UN
Security Council resolution 2231, stressing the importance of
diplomacy in addressing the complex issue of Iran's nuclear
program.
He highlighted the EU's deep reliance on the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as the sole international body
responsible for monitoring Iran's nuclear activities. However,
recent reports from the IAEA have raised serious concerns about
Iran's nuclear trajectory and its lack of cooperation with the
agency, the spokesperson noted.
"The EU is deeply concerned about Iran's nuclear proliferation
and its continued export of ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAVs), particularly to Russia," Stano said. He urged Iran
to reverse its nuclear course and cease the provision of weapons to
Russia.
Stano condemned Iran's recent delivery of missiles to Russia. He
stated that these actions violate the UN Charter and international
law and could have serious consequences for both Iran and the
broader region.
"The EU remains committed to a comprehensive policy approach
considering all options on the basis of mutual respect: critical
where and when necessary, and ready to engage where and when our
interests align. We believe diplomacy is the path to finding
solutions on sensitive issues," Stano added, noting that the EU has
already reached out to Iran's new leadership, including President
Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Araghchi.
