BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 24. COP is one of the
most inclusive events held within the UN framework, Lead Negotiator
for COP29 Azerbaijan and Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev
said during the "29 Climate Conversations: Road to COP29" media
workshop in Baku, Trend reports.
According to Rafiyev, the bottom line for this year's COP29
conference in Baku is to nail down a common objective for
society.
“What does this mean? This means that the international
community agreed in 2009 at the COP conference in Copenhagen to set
aside $100 billion a year to combat climate change in developing
countries.
This funding was intended to be in the form of grants and aid.
The main expectation from COP29 in Baku is to set a cap on this
$100 billion. Many years have passed, the world economy has
changed, requirements and needs have evolved, and nations now stare
down fresh hurdles,” he said.
The lead negotiator added that the upcoming conference in Baku
should determine the exact amount of aid developed countries should
provide to developing nations.
“We have been working with global partners since the beginning
of the year on this issue. Preparations for the negotiation process
are underway, and the positions of the parties are becoming
clearer. We are developing a strategy to brainstorm ideas and get
on the same page,” he emphasized.
This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was
made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last
year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive
about 70–80,000 foreign guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an
agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992
to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system.
COP - the Conference of the Parties - is the highest legislative
body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on
Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the
Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held
annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Germany's
Berlin, with its secretariat in Bonn.
