France’s New Popular front plans to implement "global tax" on expatriates

(MENAFN) The New Popular Front, a coalition of left-wing forces in France, has announced plans to implement a "global tax" on expatriates, modeled after the American system. This proposal was reported by a French newspaper, detailing the Front's broader tax agenda, which includes reinstating a wealth tax, enhancing the inheritance tax, and establishing 14 tax brackets to increase taxes on the wealthiest individuals.

Lucie Castets, the New Popular Front's candidate for prime minister, addressed the tax proposal during a visit to the Duralex factory in La Chapelle-Sainte-Mesmin. She was joined by Olivier Faure, First Secretary of the Socialist Party, and Marine Tondellier, National Secretary of the Green Party. Castets emphasized that expatriates who do not pay taxes in France should be required to contribute, drawing a parallel to how expatriate Americans pay taxes to the IRS, and framing it as an issue of sovereignty.

Castets further elaborated on the proposal, which would require approximately 2.5 million French citizens living abroad to pay the difference between the taxes they pay in their country of residence and the taxes they would owe if residing in France. She underscored that this measure aims to ensure fairness and maintain fiscal responsibility among French expatriates.

Despite the proposal, experts like Philippe Bruno, head of the Tax Experts Department, and tax lawyer Mabrouk Sassi, have expressed skepticism about its feasibility. They highlighted the complexities of international tax agreements and the necessity of renegotiating treaties with over 120 countries. Bruno noted that France lacks the geopolitical and financial clout of the United States, particularly the influence wielded through the power of the dollar, making the implementation of such a tax challenging.
