Adidas cuts Bella Hadid from commercial due to Israeli remarks

(MENAFN) German sportswear company Adidas has removed American model Bella Hadid from its advertising campaign for retro sneakers following criticism from Israel. Hadid, whose father is Palestinian and was born in Nazareth, has been a vocal supporter of Palestinian rights, frequently condemning the violence in Gaza. She has consistently criticized the Israeli government over the ongoing Gaza conflict, which has resulted in over 38,000 Palestinian casualties. The conflict intensified in October 2023 when the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched a military operation in Gaza in response to a deadly Hamas raid that killed approximately 1,200 Israelis.

Both Bella and her sister Gigi, also a well-known model, have used their platforms to advocate for Palestinian causes, participating in numerous pro-Palestinian demonstrations and accusing Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza. The sisters have also donated USD1 million to various Palestinian relief efforts in Gaza, including HEAL Palestine, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, World Central Kitchen, and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

Adidas recently re-launched its SL72 sneakers, describing them as “retro-inspired classics with effortless appeal.” The shoes were originally showcased during the 1972 Munich Olympics, an event marked by the tragic terrorist attack by the Palestinian group Black September, which resulted in the deaths of eleven Israeli athletes and a German police officer.
