Latest NATO summit proves that Western elites are dysfunctional

(MENAFN) Thirty-four years ago, the dissolution of the Soviet Union led to a pervasive belief in the West that this event marked the “end of history,” with Western liberalism considered the apex of historical evolution. This conviction extended to the idea that NATO would serve as the vanguard of this ideological triumph, championing the expansion of Western values and institutions globally. Consequently, the notion of endless expansion emerged, underpinned by the belief that the West was destined to lead all nations towards its ideal.

This ideology naturally fueled a vision of perpetual growth, where the West's leadership and its global organizations were seen as essential for universal progress. Many countries from the former Soviet bloc and the developing world eagerly sought to join Western-led economic entities, which promised integration into a common market, access to loans, investment opportunities, and adherence to trade regulations. While the concept of economic colonization was evident to some, the initial allure of Western civilization’s benefits was compelling. The United States, as a leading power, assured these new entrants of the advantages of joining its sphere of influence.

For Eastern European nations, the prospect of joining the European Union was particularly attractive. European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell had once likened Western Europe to a “garden,” and in the early 1990s, the European Union appeared to embody a flourishing and prosperous community. Despite facing various challenges, Western Europe seemed to have achieved an ideal balance between market economy principles and social welfare. This vision of success and stability drew numerous countries to aspire to be part of this thriving collective, hoping to replicate its prosperity and stability.

However, the latest NATO Summit underscores a growing recognition of dysfunction within Western elites. The initial promise of a harmonious and prosperous Western-led world has given way to a more complex and troubled reality. The expansionist drive and the supposed benefits of joining Western institutions have faced scrutiny, revealing underlying issues within the Western approach to global leadership and unity.
