Official declares Pakistan intending on banning Imran Khan`s party

(MENAFN) The Pakistani government has announced plans to ban former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Political party, Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), according to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar. This decision comes just days after a court overturned several of Khan's previous convictions, highlighting the ongoing political turmoil surrounding the former leader.

Khan, who is currently serving time for corruption charges, was ousted from power in April 2022. Since his removal, he has faced more than 100 legal indictments, which his supporters claim are Politically motivated attempts to undermine his influence and party.

On Monday, the interior minister stated that the government has gathered "credible evidence" indicating that Tehreek-e-Insaf received funding from foreign sources, which is against national law. The cabinet further accused the party of inciting widespread riots following Khan's arrest, which has led to significant unrest across the country.

In May 2023, violent protests erupted in Pakistan in response to Khan's detention, creating a political crisis that only began to ease when the Supreme Court ordered his release. Despite this, Khan was later re-arrested and is currently imprisoned on corruption-related charges.

Minister Tarar confirmed that the federal government would initiate legal proceedings to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, asserting that the latest allegations provide sufficient grounds for such action. However, media sources have indicated that any decision to proceed would still require approval from the Supreme Court.

Additionally, the cabinet plans to file new treason charges against Khan and former President Arif Alvi, accusing them of improperly dissolving the National Assembly during Khan’s last days in office. Khan, who took office in 2018, was ousted following a no-confidence vote.

In response to these developments, Khan's spokesman, Zulfiqar Bukhari, condemned the government's actions as politically motivated, suggesting that they reflect a state of panic among officials who recognize they can no longer exert influence over the judiciary.
