Oklahoma orders all educational institutes to teach Bible

(MENAFN) Oklahoma's superintendent of public instruction, Ryan Walters, has ignited a firestorm of debate by mandating that all public schools in the state Teach the Bible and the Ten Commandments, a move criticized as potentially violating the United States Constitution.

Walters announced the directive at a Department of Education board meeting, insisting on immediate and comprehensive compliance from all schools. He argued that the Bible is fundamental to understanding the historical and legal foundations of the United States and Western civilization. He emphasized its role in shaping the constitution and providing insight into the country's legal system.

Under the new order, every classroom from grades five to 12 in Oklahoma must possess a Bible, and teachers are required to integrate its teachings into their curriculum. This mandate has drawn swift condemnation from civil rights organizations and advocates for the separation of church and state.

State Representative Mickey Dollens voiced strong opposition, criticizing the directive for diverting attention from improving Oklahoma's educational standards. Dollens asserted that the focus should remain on educating students rather than promoting religious teachings.

Critics also argue that the directive violates constitutional principles. The First Amendment ensures freedom of religion and prohibits government endorsement of any specific religion. Moreover, Oklahoma's own constitution stipulates that public schools must remain nonsectarian and refrain from favoring any particular religious belief.

The controversy surrounding the mandate reflects broader concerns about the appropriate role of religion in public education and raises significant legal and ethical questions about religious freedom and state neutrality in matters of faith.
