Increase in deportation of EU migrants reflects stricter immigration policies

(MENAFN) Recent data from the European Union's statistics office Eurostat highlight a notable increase in the proportion of migrants being deported outside the bloc, underscoring intensified efforts to manage illegal immigration. According to Eurostat, the deportation rate rose to 29.5 percent in the first quarter of this year, up from approximately 21.6 percent during the same period in 2022. This trend coincided with a 15 percent increase in deportation decisions issued and a significant 58 percent rise in actual deportations following these decisions.

A spokesperson from the European Commission commented on these developments, noting efforts under the new return roadmap aimed at supporting member states in expediting deportations and facilitating the reintegration of migrants. The spokesperson highlighted the frequent use of mutual recognition of return decisions as a key mechanism to streamline the deportation process. This involves agreements between EU countries and the countries of origin of migrants, enabling quicker and more efficient repatriation procedures.

Since 2016, the European Union, comprising 27 member states, has entered into agreements with several countries including Mauritania, Tunisia, Turkey, and most recently Egypt, as part of its strategy to curb illegal immigration. However, these measures have drawn criticism from human rights organizations for potentially disregarding international humanitarian laws.

The increase in deportation rates and accompanying policy measures reflect the EU's broader efforts to tighten immigration controls and manage migrant flows more effectively. As debates continue regarding the humanitarian implications and legal frameworks surrounding these measures, the EU remains focused on balancing security concerns with its obligations under international law.
