World Bank passes USD600M funding package to bolster Turkey’s resilience to floods, drought

(MENAFN) The World bank has approved a substantial USD600 million financing package to bolster Türkiye’s resilience against the dual challenges of floods and droughts. The Türkiye Flood and Drought Management Project, launched with this funding, aims to significantly enhance the country's capacity to mitigate and respond to climate-related risks.

This initiative encompasses several strategic objectives aimed at fortifying Türkiye's defenses against natural disasters. Firstly, it seeks to improve flood controls in areas prone to inundation, thereby safeguarding communities and infrastructure from the devastating impacts of floods. Secondly, the project aims to empower farmers by enhancing their ability to monitor and manage drought conditions effectively. Through the provision of advanced monitoring technologies and data, approximately 10,000 farmers across the country will gain critical insights to mitigate the adverse effects of water scarcity on agriculture.

Furthermore, the project focuses on strengthening Türkiye's institutional framework for flood and drought risk management. By enhancing coordination among government agencies and local authorities, Türkiye aims to bolster its overall resilience and responsiveness in handling climate-related emergencies.

According to the World Bank, more than 150,000 people residing in seven river basins, which are particularly vulnerable to floods and droughts, will directly benefit from these interventions. This targeted approach not only aims to protect livelihoods and improve living conditions but also underscores Türkiye's proactive stance in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

Humberto Lopez, the World Bank’s country director for Türkiye, emphasized the project's alignment with Türkiye's ambitious environmental goals. He highlighted the country’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2053 and praised Türkiye's proactive measures to build resilience against climate-related risks. Lopez reiterated the World Bank’s commitment to supporting Türkiye in its comprehensive efforts to safeguard communities, promote sustainable development, and strengthen economic resilience in the face of environmental challenges.
