Volkswagen initiates recall of more than 271,000 SUVs in US over airbag issue

(MENAFN) Volkswagen has initiated a significant recall affecting more than 271,000 sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in the United States, according to a notification from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The issue revolves around the passenger occupant detection system (PODS), where a potential fault in the wiring may occur. This fault could result in the unintended deactivation of the front passenger airbag, even when the seat is occupied. Such an occurrence significantly heightens the risk of injury during a collision, as the airbag's primary safety function would be compromised.

The recall encompasses a total of 271,330 SUVs, specifically spanning the model years from 2021 to 2024 for the Volkswagen Atlas and from 2020 to 2024 for the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. Volkswagen has committed to addressing the issue promptly and effectively by offering to replace the PODS sensor mat and wiring harness free of charge for affected vehicle owners. This corrective action aims to restore the intended functionality of the airbag system, thereby enhancing overall vehicle safety.

Owners of the affected vehicles can expect to receive official notification letters starting on August 16th, detailing the steps necessary to rectify the issue. This proactive approach underscores Volkswagen's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its customers, prioritizing their peace of mind on the road. By swiftly addressing the airbag-related concern, Volkswagen aims to maintain the high standards of safety and reliability associated with its vehicles, thereby reaffirming its dedication to customer satisfaction and safety across the United States.
