(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has disclosed that a new security agreement between Kiev and Washington includes provisions for the United States to deliver "squadrons" of fighter jets to Ukraine. The deal, signed on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Fasano, Italy, underscores America's ongoing support for Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia.
The 10-year agreement, signed with US President Joe Biden, encompasses extensive commitments from Washington, including the supply of weapons, training for Ukrainian troops, intelligence sharing, and investments in Ukraine's defense industry. Zelensky emphasized the significance of the accord, describing it as the "strongest agreement" between the two nations, firmly backing Ukraine's efforts to combat Russian aggression.
Specifically addressing the military support outlined in the agreement, Zelensky highlighted provisions for advanced weaponry such as Patriot systems and multiple squadrons of fighter aircraft, potentially including F-16s. Stressing the importance of these deliveries, Zelensky noted, "We have worked for a long time for these."
While Zelensky detailed the inclusion of fighter squadrons in the agreement, Biden did not confirm the specifics of aircraft deliveries during the joint press conference. Biden focused instead on the commitment to supply Patriot air defense systems, indicating that the United States has secured agreements from five nations for these deliveries to Ukraine.
Regarding the timeline for these deliveries, Biden assured that Ukraine's urgent defense needs would be prioritized, stating, "Everything we have is going to go to Ukraine until their needs are met. And then we will make good on the commitments we made to other countries."
The agreement marks a significant escalation in military assistance to Ukraine from the United States, reflecting a deepening commitment to bolstering Ukraine's defense capabilities amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
