Greece sees alarming outbreak of 66 wildfires in 24 hours

(MENAFN) In a challenging 24-hour period from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday local time, Greece experienced an alarming outbreak of 66 wildfires, according to late Saturday reports from various media sources. Out of these, firefighting teams managed to contain 52 fires during their initial stages, preventing them from causing extensive damage. However, 14 fires remain active, necessitating continued efforts by firefighting units. The state-run AMNA news agency has highlighted the considerable efforts being made to control the fires, especially those in the Kontodespoti area on Evia Island and the town of Sapci, also known as Sapes, in Western Thrace.

In addition to the widespread wildfires, authorities arrested 13 individuals on the island of Hydra in connection with a particularly alarming incident. These suspects are accused of causing a wildfire by throwing fireworks while on a cruise aboard a yacht. This incident underscores the severe consequences of reckless behavior during periods of high fire risk and highlights the importance of adhering to safety regulations to prevent such disasters.

The Civil Protection Ministry has issued a grave warning about the very high risk of wildfires in the Attica region, which includes the greater Athens area and the adjacent port city of Piraeus, as well as on the island of Evia. This warning is in response to the extreme heat expected on Sunday, which exacerbates the already challenging firefighting conditions. The intense heat not only increases the likelihood of new fires breaking out but also hampers efforts to control existing fires, placing additional strain on the firefighting teams.

The situation in Greece is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of wildfires, particularly during periods of extreme weather. It calls for heightened vigilance, responsible behavior from residents and visitors, and robust firefighting strategies to protect lives, property, and the environment from the ravages of fire. The ongoing efforts to control the fires are crucial in mitigating the immediate threat and preventing further devastation in the affected regions.
