Algerian FM: Africa Calls For UNSC Reform

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ALGIERS, June 10 (KUNA) -- Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmad Attaf said on Monday that Africa called for a reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to lift historical injustice.
This came in a statement by the minister during the opening of the 11th ministerial meeting of the Committee of 10 Heads of State and governments of the African Union (C10) on the UNSC's reform in Algiers.
Attaf said that reforming the UNSC is demanded by Africa as Africa was the only one absent in the category of permanent seats and the least one represented in the council.
Attaf gave two example to demonstrate the dangerous and exceptional situation that international relations are going through these days.
The first was the situation in Gaza and the full-fledged war of genocide for more than eight months with the council being unable to curb the Israeli occupation aggression.
He also mentioned the situation in Africa and the increase of tension and conflict amid the growing dangers of foreign interventions that have become a fundamental factor in fueling conflicts.
He stressed that Algeria firmly believes that reforming the Security Council imposes itself today and that it has to be a priority to the council.
The C10, a specialized committee within the African Union, is tasked with advocating for the continent's interests in the ongoing global discourse on UNSC reform.
Member States of the Committee of Ten include Kenya, Uganda, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Libya, Equatorial Guinea, Senegal, Zambia, the Republic of Congo, and Algeria. (end)
