Palestine seeks to join South Africa's genocide case against Israel at ICJ

(MENAFN) Palestine has reportedly submitted a request to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to participate in the genocide case initiated by South Africa against Israel, according to local media reports on Monday. The Palestinian application, filed on May 31, seeks permission to intervene and make a declaration of intervention in South Africa's case concerning the Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip.

The official Palestinian news agency highlighted that this move underscores Palestine's commitment to upholding Legitimacy and international law as essential components for addressing historical injustices and holding Israel accountable for its alleged crimes. The agency urged all states party to the Genocide Convention to support the legal proceedings initiated by South Africa, aiming to protect the Palestinian people from genocide and prevent such atrocities from recurring in the future, thereby safeguarding the integrity of the international legal framework.

Chile recently announced its participation in South Africa's case before the ICJ, joining a growing list of nations that have either approached or expressed intentions to approach the ICJ regarding this matter. Since January, at least nine countries, including Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya, and Mexico, have taken steps in this direction. Additionally, Turkey announced its intention in early May to officially apply for involvement in South Africa's genocide case against Israel at the ICJ, as confirmed by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
