Kampala, Jan. 23 (Petra) -- Jordan marked its presence at the third South Summit of G77+China in Kampala, Uganda, with a delegation led by Minister of State Wajih Azaizeh. The delegation also included Firas Khoury, the Jordanian ambassador to Kenya and non-resident ambassador to Uganda.
China and the Group of 77 (G77+China), the largest UN intergovernmental organization of developing nations, serves as a forum to promote its members' collective economic interests and create an enhanced joint negotiating capacity in the UN.
Addressing the summit on Tuesday, Azaizeh underscored the significance of the event in strengthening ties and cooperation among G77+China members, emphasizing it as an avenue for promoting sustainable development and tackling global challenges.
He lauded Uganda for creating a conducive environment for fruitful discussions and for its commitment to fostering international cooperation and solidarity.
Azaizeh highlighted the summit as a testament to the enduring strength and unity of G77+China, reflecting a collective vision for enhanced negotiating power within the United Nations system.
He reiterated the group's commitment to building a more equitable and prosperous global community.
He drew attention to the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the G77+China and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), acknowledging it as a reminder of the group's rich history and achievements.
Azaizeh called for renewed commitment to the foundational principles that have guided the group for six decades.
The Minister stressed the need for continued international cooperation to address challenges like geopolitical tensions, food and energy security, inflation, market fluctuations, displacement, and the refugee crisis.
He also emphasized the importance of addressing climate change, preserving biodiversity, and supporting climate conference outcomes, aligning with Jordan's national efforts in environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Azaizeh noted Jordan's focus on national water projects, smart agriculture, and the 2030 Agenda, reflecting a commitment to balanced development.
He expressed concern over the financing gap for the Sustainable Development Goals and called for increased support and global efforts to accelerate progress.
He also highlighted Jordan's commitment to addressing poverty, improving education and healthcare, and empowering youth and women, as evident in the nation's policies and strategies.
Concluding his speech, Azaizeh conveyed appreciation for Uganda's role in hosting the summit and expressed hope that the event would mark a new chapter in the journey towards a more inclusive and equitable world.
It is also noted that Azaizeh participated in the nineteenth summit of the Non-Aligned Movement held in Kampala, delivering Jordan's address at the summit.
