Cairo: Secretary-General of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI), HE Sultan bin Hassan Al Jamali, has called for ensuring the right to education in Palestine and protecting it, as well as ensuring the application of this right within the framework of the Palestinian cultural identity.

HE Secretary-General of ANNHRI pointed out that the Palestinian people not only have been deprived of their rights to education, but have been deprived of their right to live as well, along with all fundamental rights, affirming that the Regional Dialogue Forum on the Future of Education, Learning and Human Rights Education in the Arab Region under the theme: "Towards a New Social Contract", comes in difficult circumstances facing the Palestinian people and all nations in the region and the world that upholds the principle of humanity, peace and human rights, due to the violation of the rights of Palestinian people to self-determination, along with the abuses perpetrated against civilians in Gaza Strip, such as murder, forced displacement, ethnic cleansing and denying them medicines, food and water, decimating the infrastructure, targeting health and educational facilities, as well as relief convoys and journalists.

He underscored that these crimes precipitate an immediate and resolute action on the part of the international group to recognize respect for the principles of international humanitarian law, international human rights law, and halting the violations of the rights of the Palestinian people.

He noted the recommendations issued by the participants in the aforementioned forum, adding that such recommendations came as a result of collective work and will be submitted to all parties concerned with education in the Arab region.

The forum has recommended for launching the new social contract for education in the Arab countries, based on ensuring the right to good lifelong education, promoting education through investing in its quality with a rock-solid political commitment, rigorous and comprehensive reforms, Al Jamali added.

He emphasized that the forum recommended for allocating a large proportion of budgets to ensure sustainable funding and good governance of resources, diversification and ramification of education, connecting education to the labor market and sustainable development, as well as conducting a comprehensive vetting of the outcomes of education at its diverse stages based on a forward-looking vision that considers the faster-paced evolutions of business markets and the increasing dependence on digital technology.

Al Jamali noted the recommendation made by the participants to reinforce the efforts aimed at addressing the problems facing education in the Arab region, ensure that all universities and public and private higher education institutions operate in lockstep with ministries of education and scientific research in undertaking the role to build the new social contract in the Arab countries through supporting research and encouraging applied scientific studies as a gateway to upgrading conceptual polices and approaches.

His Excellency underscored the significance of training all workers in education, spurring them, as well as supporting and optimizing their career situation, in addition to prioritizing a special interest to ensure that all children obtain preschool education and promptly adopt care standards in early childhood.

He stressed the importance of advancing the rights of vulnerable segments, including refugees, immigrants, and displaced people with respect to education and vocational training, as well as the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in all fields of education and its relevant systems. This is in addition to ensuring their full inclusion and considering the disability indicators in national statistics to further set and execute effective policies.

Al Jamali lauded the anticipated participation of national human rights institutions in giving impetus to the process of establishing a new social contract on the future of education and urge the competent entities, each one in its countries, to frame and apply this contract. The forum wrapped up its activities in Cairo, Egypt on Monday.
