doha, aug 23 (kuna) -- boasting high-rise walls and towers, al-zubarah fort in qatar bears witness to this gulf country's ancient history and august heritage.
the archaeological site was established in 1938 by sheikh abdullah bin jassim al thani to protect qatar's western coast, and was used as a coast guard station until mid-1980s. it has then transferred into a museum where visitors can explore artefacts from the pearl diving era.
adjacent to the walled coastal town of al zubarah, the fortress was renowned for trading and pear-diving in the northwest of qatar. (end) sss.mt
