(MENAFN- Oman Sail ) 22 August 2023, Muscat – Thirty young sailors from Oman Sail’s Sailing Schools will take to the waters of Ras Al Hadd over three days from 22-24 August 2023 to help select the next national sailing squads. Sailors between the ages of 10 and 18 in Optimist, ILCA 4 and ILCA 6 classes will compete in nine races for the honour of being crowned Oman national champion and joining the national team for upcoming regattas.

Sailors have been selected from Oman Sail’s Sailing Schools at Al Mouj Muscat, Barceló Mussanah Resort and Sur. The fleet will also include five sailors from the Al-Hamriyah Sailing Team in the United Arab Emirates as part of their own preparation plans for the coming season. Each team will be accompanied by a coach to support the sailors throughout the event.

Abdulaziz Al-Shidi, Oman Sail’s Sailing Development Manager, said, “The Oman Sailing Championship is both the culmination of our season’s training and a chance to see the progress of our sailors in action. Progressing to the national squad is a key step in our Performance Pathway and offers the best performing sailors the opportunity to represent Oman in regional and international competition.”

“We are looking forward to bringing together sailors in all four classes from each of our Sailing Schools to see the most promising of the next generation of Omani sailors,” he added.

The next major event for the young sailors will be Mussanah Race Week, held at Barceló Mussanah Resort where 50 sailors from across the region will compete in the Optimist, ILCA 4 and ILCA 7 classes from 18-24 October. Then the national Optimist team will travel to Abu Dhabi for the 2023 IODA Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championship from 29 October to 5 November 2023.
