Suspected suicide bombing in Pakistan kills 40, injures hundreds


(MENAFN) Police stated that over 40 citizens were murdered and hundreds wounded in a doubted suicide explosion before a public meeting in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday evening.

The bombing happened at about 5 PM regional time (1200GMT), an hour ahead of the occasion was arranged to start in the tribal Bajaur area, placed close the borderline with Afghanistan, police reported.

The meeting had been scheduled by the Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI), which is an alliance partner in the federal administration. Local Police Head Nasir Satti informed the press that the bombing, the fourth one in under three weeks in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkwa district, seems to be an action of a suicide bomber.

Region health spokesman Dr. Faisal Kamal stated to the press that over 40 bodies have been carried to the regional administration hospital. Previously, Provincial Information Minister Feroz Jamal expressed to the journalists that there were more than 200 people wounded.

Health representatives worry that the death number could increase, as some of the wounded are in dangerous state.

The channel declared that the regional JUI manager Maulana Ziaullah was among the dead. A cameraman from a regional broadcasting channel was also seriously damaged.
