Qatar University Students Attend Who 2023 Global Model Virtual Conference

doha: qatar university's (qu) medical and health students recently participated in the who 2023 global model, a ten-day virtual conference.

they provided an immersive learning experience for students in the public health, biomedical sciences, and pharmacy fields. the event proved to be a resounding success in fostering global awareness and equipping students with crucial leadership and diplomatic skills.

the who 2023 global model aimed to provide qu health sector students with a deep understanding of global health issues, decision-making processes, and the importance of multilateral cooperation. through engaging in dialogue, negotiations, and simulations of the world health assembly (wha), the students gained valuable insights into global challenges and explored effective strategies for addressing them.

during the conference, participating students learned how to chair meetings, negotiate resolutions, and seek consensus on key public health issues.

the programme emphasised the development of leadership skills, effective communication, research capabilities, and the ability to express their thoughts on global health matters. through their active involvement in this immersive experience, students honed their skills in negotiating, debating, public speaking, and conducting comprehensive research.

around 198 high school and university students from over 40 countries participated in the conference. in addition, 29 student volunteers from over 18 countries supported the conference by representing the who secretariat. from qu, 11 public health students, one biomedical sciences student, and 11 pharmacy students participated in this programme. yusra el shaikh, a public health student, won the position paper award, and diala al haj moustafa, a pharmacy student, won the diplomacy award.

health sciences and pharmacy students at qu health seized the opportunity to engage in fruitful discussions and negotiations, shedding light on pressing health challenges and proposing practical solutions. this unique learning experience not only broadened their understanding of global health issues but also provided them with invaluable practical skills that will benefit them in their future careers.

one of the highlights of the who 2023 global model was the negotiation and adoption of eight resolutions by the student delegates. these resolutions showcased the students' dedication, common sense, and passion for finding innovative solutions to global health challenges. through their participation in the conference, the students demonstrated their commitment to making a positive impact on the world and their readiness to contribute to the decision-making processes that shape health policies on a global scale.

through this immersive experience, students gained a broader perspective on global health challenges, developed crucial skills, and networked with peers from diverse backgrounds.
