(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN - In Jordan, 42 per cent of the population are smokers, and 9.2 per cent use e-cigarettes, a study revealed on Wednesday. The conclusions of the study, conducted by the King Hussein Cancer Centre (KHCC), were revealed during an awareness day co-organised by KHCC and the University of Jordan's (UJ) faculty of pharmacy on the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day, an occasion annually celebrated on May 31, according to a UJ statement.
The results of the study showed that males who smoke typically start smoking at the age of 17, while females tend to pick up the habit around 24.
According to the study, Jordan's 42 per cent proportion of smokers is "very high and worrying", as smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and is a known cause of over 20 types of cancer.
The study also showed that the use of e-cigarettes among young people harms the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood and emotion.
The study also showed that smoke inhalation from a regular one-hour session of smoking shisha (water pipe tobacco) is equivalent to 100-200 times the damage caused by smoking a single cigarette.
Dean of the faculty of pharmacy, Rula Darwish said that celebrating the day is a valuable opportunity to jointly promote awareness and create a healthy society free of smoking, as its risks are not only linked to health, but also to economic and social dimensions, which requires joining efforts with various sectors to address the issue.
Rana Ghafari, head of lobbying and government affairs at KHCC, said that the centre spares no efforts to raise awareness and conduct research to limit the effects of tobacco addiction and urge the public to quit smoking.
