Gemlik Olives of Turkey's Bursa Province to Receive EU Recognition

(MENAFN) Turkey's Minister of Industry and Technology announced on Monday that the renowned Gemlik olives from the northwestern province of Bursa will soon gain official recognition from the European Union (EU). Mustafa Varank stated that the Gemlik olive has been officially registered in the Official Journal of the European Commission, and by May 28, the registration process will be completed, granting it recognition as an EU-recognized product.

Varank highlighted the efforts initiated in January to mobilize international geographical indication, aiming to effectively protect Turkey's local and regional values on the international stage. He emphasized that after the necessary procedures are finalized, the number of Turkish products registered in the EU will increase to 14.

With the ambition to register a total of 100 Turkish products possessing significant commercial potential at the international level, Varank revealed that 41 applications are currently in progress before the EU Commission. These ongoing proceedings indicate Turkey's commitment to preserving and promoting its rich agricultural heritage and unique products.

The recognition of Gemlik olives by the EU signifies a significant milestone for this distinct Turkish variety. Gemlik olives are known for their exceptional quality, taste, and unique characteristics, which have contributed to their popularity both domestically and internationally. The official recognition from the EU will further enhance their reputation and open doors to new opportunities in European markets.

This achievement aligns with Turkey's broader strategy to protect and showcase its diverse agricultural products and regional specialties. By securing international recognition, Turkish products gain a competitive advantage in terms of branding, marketing, and consumer trust. The government's efforts in pursuing geographical indication registrations demonstrate a commitment to preserving the cultural and economic significance of local products while expanding their global reach.

The recognition of Gemlik olives by the EU is not only a source of pride for Bursa province but also an encouraging development for Turkish producers and exporters. It paves the way for increased market access, potential growth in exports, and the promotion of Turkish agricultural excellence on a broader international scale.
