Ex-Soldiers sue pentagon for withholding records on toxins at Uzbek military base
(MENAFN) Groups representing ex-soldiers have filed a lawsuit against the Pentagon, alleging that the agency has withheld crucial information on hazardous materials that caused American troops to fall ill while stationed at the Karshi-Khanabad Air Base, also known as “K2,” during the early years of the war in Afghanistan. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Connecticut on Monday, demands that the Pentagon release its records on the toxins to which the troops were exposed.
During United States operations at the Uzbek military base from 2001 to 2005, at least 15,777 United States service members were deployed at K2, which was used as a staging ground for United States troop transports and air strikes on targets in Afghanistan. The ex-soldiers' groups claim that the Pentagon has hidden information on hazardous materials such as uranium and nerve gas that caused the troops to suffer from various illnesses.
Kim Brooks, a board member for the Stronghold Freedom Foundation, spoke out against the Pentagon's lack of transparency during a press briefing in New Haven, Connecticut. Brooks stated that the K2 victims have been living with the toxic truth inside their bodies for over 20 years, with many dying as a result. She emphasized that the government's refusal to release records on the toxins found at K2 has prevented the victims and their families from receiving the justice and closure they deserve.
The lawsuit highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in government agencies, particularly when it comes to the safety and well-being of United Sattes service members. As the legal proceedings unfold, the public will be looking to see if the Pentagon will comply with the demands of the ex-soldiers' groups and release the records on the hazardous materials at K2.
