Lebanon's Maronite Patriarch Calls for Politicians to Serve Love, Justice, Good of Humanity

(MENAFN) On Palm Sunday, Lebanon's Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Al-Rahi delivered a sermon calling on politicians to serve love, justice, and the good of humanity. He reminded believers of the many children who are denied the joy of the holiday and emphasized that the purpose of the power entrusted to politicians is service, not oppression.

Al-Rahi urged politicians to destroy their inner tendencies towards corruption and selfishness and serve the common good instead of personal interests or embezzling public funds. He emphasized that a true politician is a servant and that Politics is a noble art in service of the people.

Furthermore, Al-Rahi addressed the nation's MPs, calling on them to promptly elect a president so that order can be restored to constitutional institutions. Lebanon has been facing a presidential vacuum for six months, and parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri has ended sessions to elect a president after 11 failures.

In an attempt to overcome the obstacles impeding the presidential elections, the head of the Marada Movement, Suleiman Frangieh, returned from Paris on Saturday after meeting French officials, including Patrick Dorrell, an adviser to the French president. Frangieh is the presidential candidate supported by Hezbollah and its allies, and his meetings were held as the French work towards finding a solution.

Al-Rahi is scheduled to meet with Christian MPs on Wednesday to try to smooth the way for a presidential candidate who enjoys broad support among the parties to emerge. The economic and political matters were also topics in Al-Rahi's message, as children carried candles and olive branches and participated in processions.
