NTSB launches investigation into safety practices at Norfolk Southern railway

(MENAFN) The United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has initiated a rare "special investigation" into Norfolk Southern Railway's safety practices and culture following a train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio over a month ago, which may have released one of the most dangerous substances on the planet, potentially affecting the health and safety of the town residents.

The NTSB cited three employee deaths and three significant train derailments, including the incident in Ohio, since December 2021, as the reasons behind this decision, and urged Norfolk Southern to take immediate steps to evaluate its safety practices in a statement released on Tuesday. The safety of Norfolk Southern's operations is critical to the United States, according to the NTSB.

The NTSB has launched four probes in the past five weeks related to incidents involving Norfolk Southern's Ohio operations, demonstrating the significance of the safety concerns raised by the operator's operations. Hours after the announcement of the NTSB's latest investigation, a collision between a train and a dump truck at a rail crossing in Cleveland resulted in the death of the train conductor.

The occurrence highlights the need for the NTSB's investigation into Norfolk Southern's safety practices and culture, as well as the operator's commitment to maintaining the safety of its operations, which are crucial to the nation's transportation infrastructure.
