Doha: The Ministry of Public health (MoPH), in cooperation with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Primary health care Cooperation (PHCC), is participating in marking of the World Obesity Day.

The World Obesity Day is marked every year on March 4 and aims to promote the importance of coordinated actions to halt the rising prevalence of overweight and reverse the global obesity crisis. This year's campaign focuses on the theme“Changing Perspectives Let's Talk About Obesity”.

Prof. Abdul Badi Abou-Samra, Co-Chair of the National diabetes Committee, MoPH, and Director of Qatar Metabolic Institute (QMI) at HMC, said,“Overweight and obesity are global problems that demand attention across all levels of society in many countries worldwide. Qatar is also experiencing a prevalence of obesity that affects the adult population (approximately 42%) and increasingly children and adolescents. Strong evidence now shows that obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are interconnected. Obesity is one of the major contributors to the rising prevalence of T2DM in Qatar.'

Senior Consultant in Community Medicine, Head of Non-Communicable Disease at MoPH and Co-Chair of the National Diabetes Committee, Dr. Kholoud Al Mutawaa said,“It is crucial to address the obesity epidemic in Qatar. Combined with the escalating burden of non-communicable diseases, such as T2DM diabetes and cardiovascular disease, overweight and obesity are becoming an issue of high national concern for the Qatari health services and policymakers.'

Prof. Shahrad Taheri, Director of the National Obesity Treatment Center, HMC, and Chair of the National Diabetes Strategy Research Sub-Committee, MoPH, commented,“Halting and reversing the rising prevalence of overweight and obesity requires a multidisciplinary approach. A National Obesity Treatment Centre (NOTC) has been established at HMC to streamline the care of people with obesity through holistic inter-professional care. The NOTC receives about 20,000 visits by patients per year and is equipped to investigate and manage obesity and its complications.'
