European farmers: Fruit, vegetable supply problems seen in UK not being experienced in EU countries
(MENAFN) European farmers have stated that the fruit and vegetable supply problems seen in the UK due to bad weather and harvesting problems in Morocco and Spain are not being experienced in EU countries. The UK government has blamed high temperatures, lack of rain, and cold weather for the worst growing season the country has seen in years, which has caused rationing of vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers. However, Copa-Cogeca, a group representing European farmers, has said that the EU market is much more flexible, and the supply to retailers has been managed despite a squeeze on supply due to weather conditions in Spain and decreased production in Northern Europe. While there has been an increase in price for consumers, it has not been enough to offset the rise in production costs.
According to a spokesperson for Copa-Cogeca, limited national production in the UK, which is under pressure due to high energy prices and not enough assistance from the government, is the most likely reason for the shortages. Brexit has not helped the situation, as EU producers are more likely to export within the EU market, which means that in situations like this where production in the EU is affected, the exports suffer. The UK has experienced a multitude of reasons for the shortages, and the Copa-Cogeca spokesperson believes it is due to limited national production, high energy prices, and adverse weather events in Morocco and Spain, on which the UK is highly dependent.
