IEA urges global energy sector to aid earthquake-hit region in Turkey

(MENAFN) Fatih Birol, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), has called on the global energy sector to provide urgent assistance to the earthquake-hit region in Turkey. In a post on his Twitter account, he expressed his sympathy for those affected by the disaster and called for greater international solidarity. Birol went on to list a number of urgently needed items, based on his discussions with authorities and crisis response organizations.

The list of essential items includes transformers of various sizes, portable solar power generators, LPG for rural communities, electric heaters, and various shelters, such as container homes and Arctic tents. The devastating magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 earthquakes that occurred on February 6, centered in the Kahramanmaras province, have so far claimed the lives of at least 31,643 people, according to Turkey's disaster agency, AFAD. More than 13 million people across 10 provinces have been affected by the disaster, including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, and Sanliurfa.

The situation in the region remains dire, and there is an urgent need for assistance from the international community. The global energy sector has a crucial role to play in helping to provide the necessary aid and support to the affected communities in Turkey. With Birol's call for action, it is hoped that the industry will come together to provide the essential resources needed to help those affected by this tragedy.
