Doha: If you've ever wondered how Qatar looks from the space, ponder no more! A Japanese astronaut shared a stunning night shot of bright lights illuminating Qatar from about 400km above Earth.
Engineer and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut, Dr Wakata Koichi, is aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for a scheduled spacewalk when he shared a view of Qatar from space on Tuesday, January 31, 2023.
On Twitter, Koichi said: 'The city lights of Doha, Qatar looked so bright when we flew over earlier today!'
Citizens and residents in Qatar would instantly recognize Corniche's seven kilometre promenade visible in the centre of the photo while The Pearl and Lusail is just a nudge away beside it.
Curious eyes may also catch the elliptical shape on the top-right hand of the picture where the Shahaniyah Camel Race Track is located. The Al Bayt Stadium can also be seen illuminated on the bottom-right hand of the photo.
Apart from Qatar, the 59 year-old astronaut has also shared various space views of other countries such as the sunset view over Italy, the evening scene in Abu Dhabi, clear skies over Monterey, Mexico and many more.
Koichi Wakata is currently aboard the International Space Station for a scheduled spacewalk tomorrow, February 2. He will be joined by NASA astronaut Nicole Mann to continue the installation of hardware for future power system upgrades.
In a statement, NASA announced that the spacewalk is scheduled to begin at 8:15 am EST and will last about six and a half hours. It will also provide live coverage of the spacewalk which will begin at 6:45 am, on NASA Television, the NASA app, and the agency's website.
Mann will serve as extravehicular crew member 1 and will wear a suit with red stripes while Wakata will serve as extravehicular crew member 2 and will wear an unmarked suit. This marks as the second spacewalk for Mann and Wakata.
